Single stem severance and root plate restraint

Learner workbook with illustrated video lessons

8 modules | 28 lessons | 28 video lessons | 24 knowledge checks

This course prepares you to assess and sever individual single-stem windblown trees, including practical winching, root-plate restraint, snedding and delimbing for access, and controlled release. Study assessment and restraint first, then branch-removal preparation before the severing methods.

Practical instruction is essential

Windblown trees can contain unstable root plates, suspended weight and severe stored forces. Reading a sequence or completing a knowledge check does not establish competence. Do not attempt an unfamiliar operation without task-specific training and appropriate supervision.

Use the Hub

Read each lesson, study its illustrations and watch the matching illustrated video. Record your responses under the lesson number in your learning notes, and discuss questions with your instructor. The videos support the practical instruction provided during training.

Use the supplied scene or an instructor-provided example for online activities. Carry out practical work only in the agreed supervised training. Watching videos or answering questions does not authorise independent cutting or winching.

Before practical training

  • Confirm the current entry requirements, prerequisite chainsaw competence, permitted tree conditions, diameter range, methods and saw combinations with H&W Training.
  • Confirm the people, equipment, communications, first aid and emergency access for the actual operation. Do not work on windblow alone.
  • Illustrations explain relationships and possible movement. They are not dimensional cutting templates or proof that an illustrated position is safe for a real tree.

Scope and stopping boundaries

The practical subject is individual single-stem severance. A single tree may still have dangerous connections, mixed loading or an unstable root plate. The later recognition lessons explain when to stop for partly standing or lodged trees, broken tops, standing damaged stems and multiple interconnected windblow. They do not teach those felling or takedown operations.

Initial Hub response

Record your name, instructor, course date and previous relevant training. Identify unfamiliar techniques or equipment and any limits that need confirming before practical work. There is no automatic practical pass attached to these online checks.
